"The Narrows" Zions North Canyon

jobonekanobee

It seems like everywhere I’ve been, I always met someone who has gone to Zion. The majority of those individuals say that they’ve had the opportunity to hike the Narrows. So here is a blog post all about how you can have the best experience when you adventure into the Narrows in Zion.

-First, you will get wet! Although most hikes in Zion are away from water, what makes the Narrows unique and special is that for the majority of the hike you are walking in water. Be prepared to dress appropriately. I recommend, if possible, bringing an extra pair of water shoes to use while walking through the river. This is important because most people forget a second pair and end up getting blisters from the rubbing or wet material on skin. If you bring pants that are loose and able to roll up, those are good, preferably wear shorts though. That’s the best option for sure. Wearing a swimsuit under your clothes is also a fun choice in case you want to get more wet on a hot summer day.

-Don’t be misled by the name. Many people expect slot canyons when they go to hike the narrows, the fact is, comparatively, the Narrows are quite wide, yet still so beautiful! With towering cliffs that rise up for hundreds of feet, the beautiful red rock, mixed with the serenading strea, make this hike one of the world's most memorable experiences. One of my favorite aspects the Narrows has to offer is the fact that a lot of people can be doing the hike, yet it still feels like you have the canyon to yourself at times. Enjoy every moment and do your best to avoid stepping on loose river rocks and rolling your ankle.

-Know that the Narrows can be a very long excursion. While most people visit the mouth of the canyon and hike a few miles up and back, the actual hike goes for over 12 miles. This can be confusing for many people and very tiresome, as they prepare poorly for this hike. If you plan on hiking the entire trail be sure to bring snacks, water, and even emergency item in case of possible injury. Beforehand look at weather conditions and be sure not to start your venture up the canyon if the weather forecast suggests a rain storm at any time during your hike…that would not be good. Flash floods are no stranger to Zion national park.

Now go and have fun! Enjoy this hike, it truly is one of the most beautiful experiences that anyone could imagine! Keep expectations high as Zion National Park is sure to welcome great experiences and lots of memories.
