Summers in southern Utah can be brutal! It can be very hard to enjoy time in the outdoors, when it’s 105 degrees. The good thing about living in southern Utah is you have the ability to escape the heat when needed. One of my favorite things to do is spend time in the higher elevation of Pine Valley. Here are a few activities that you can do to escape the heat and enjoy the cooler weather on Pine Valley mountain.
Arrow Heads in Grass Valley
One of my family's favorite things to do is hunt arrowheads in the grass valley. Hundreds of years ago, the native american people did a lot of hunting with their bows and arrows on Pine Valley mountain. Small treasures are the tokens left behind from their hunting trips. An arrowhead is a small piece of flint or obsidian fashioned into an arrow shape and fastened to the end of an arrow used for hunting wildlife. It can be so fun to leisurely walk the hills of grass valley scanning the ground looking for the ancient arrowheads. It’s even more fun to actually find one! You will be surprised at how many there can be.

Pine Valley reservoir
Sometimes it's nice to switch things up when enjoying the outdoors. One safe family friendly activity is to spend time at the lake. Pine Valley Reservoir offers the great opportunity to both escape the heat and have fun while playing on the shores of the cool water. For those that enjoy getting wet, streams flow freely below the reservoir traveling down the valley to cool those that take a dip in their waters. If you’re into fishing, look no further! Pine Valley reservoir is full of beautiful lake trout. Pack a lunch and spend the day at the lake, you wont regret it!
Hikes on the mountainside
Pine Valley has hundreds of beautiful tree covered hikes where you can experience the beauty of animals in their natural habitat. Mule deer, jackrabbits, turkeys, squirrels and rock chucks are a few of the native animals that inhabit these beautiful hills. You might even have the opportunity to catch a horney toad, kids absolutely love that! It’s nice to know that your kids can wander and still be safe because these hiking trails are groomed well and less crowded than popular neighboring hikes in Zion National Park or Snow Canyon State park.
