Slot canyons have always been at the top of my favorites list, however its not just me that loves the canyoneering experience. So many people want to defend into Southern Utahs legendary slot canyons. Because of this, most slot canyons in the area are closed to the general public, and require a permit to enjoy the extraordinary experiences. Most of the time these permits take months, even years to acquire! This can be a complete bummer to those that want a good weekend canyoneering adventure, but there is always a solution if you know just where to look:)

Fat Mans Misery is a slot canyon that is unique, beautiful, and thrilling all at the same time. The best part about this slot, is that it doesn't require a permit to participate in the hike! Personally, I feel that Fat Mans Misery is easily just as good or even better than excursions such as The Subway in Zion, or Antelope Canyon near Lake Powell. Amazingly, the hike has somehow been kept a secret for many years, and allows hikers to enjoy a beautiful slot canyon without worrying about hundreds of people doing the same hike.

The hike is beautiful. I remember the first time I wiggled through Fat Mans Misery. I was in awe at the hundred food cliffs above me, the dark and mysterious caverns, and the roaring waterfalls of the virgin river. At some points the slot seems like it will never end, but just when you start thinking like that it opens up into beautiful river basins, and unique slabbed rocks. The end of the slot is particularly memorable as natural springs pour out of the walls and lead out out into the wide virgin river canyon. It is something that one can never forget.
The hike begins near Checkerboard Mesa in the east part of Zion. There is a small parking lot right next to the trailhead. A few unkept trails go for about 3 miles before reaching the edge of the park itself and near the descend point of Fat Mans Misery. The slot canyon is actually located outside of the park, its just the beginning that takes place within. Rope, harnesses, and helmets are required to descend into and within the slot. A dry bag is a good thing to bring if possible. After reaching the virgin river at the end of the slot you have the option to double back on a trail to the west of the slot, or journey up the virgin river to a car with someone picking you up, or dropped off earlier in the day. Personally if you are in good shape I would recommend doubling back. That way you don't have to bring two cars and worry about the drop off and pick up.

If you have a free Saturday I highly recommend participating in this beautiful experience. Ask me some questions if you have any, if not get out there and have a wonderful time! More information can be found on the internet if needed.
